Where else
but in Alaska would someone take a picture of mud . . . and be so excited to see it, feel it, step in it? Hmmmm? Join me for a moment of silence as we gaze in rapt delight at . . .
. . . open road. Yes, friends, the road home is melting. Hurrah!! It won't be long now before we can bring the bikes home and out of storage. Yeah! The driveway itself still has a lot of slushy snow, but that, too, is going away. We have freezes every night and then thawing and melting all day long. The frost has not "broken through" yet, however, so the meltwater stands on top of the road. Behind me in this picture is our street's annual lake. It nearly covers the entire road across now. One day I will come home from work and it will be gone - just like that. The frost will break through and the water will seep into the ground and we will do a happy-happy-joy-joy dance.
Squishing our toes in the mud. Scraping our shoes at the door each night.
Spring may just finally have sprung in Kenai. Woo-hoo!

Its surely spring here. Daffodils and tulips are poking up, the rains have replaced the snow and all the birds are back. As much as I love snow, you can't beat the smell of a spring morning.
I've got to hand it to you. I just don't think I could live in Alaska! It's TOO cold in winter, too MUCH snow, and not enough summer!
I sure wouldn't mind living in Washington state, though. :D
It's definitely spring in the SF Bay Area!
I can remember waiting for the thaw!! driving through snowcones, and slushies waiting for the bottom layer to thaw so the rest could run off.
My favorite episode of NORTHERN EXPOSURE was called Break-up!! What a hoot.
ANd Dana Stabenow has a good book titled BREAK UP (I think) I supose you have read all of her books. I have, except for the science fiction series. LOVE HER books
Never heard of that auther will have to look her up...
Mom I too was driving down our dirt road and thought. OH MY! look at that we are into breakup. WAHOO!!!!!....... now if only my drivway would clear up too. oh and the mountains of snow that are everywere. But not to much longer and we will be clearing the lot next to us. and starting to dig and build a new home for our new neighbors. and the fun will begin anew. Oh I just cant waite. Love you! Thank you for being excited over mud too. I thought I was the only one. LOL
I love you people but you are crazy for wishing all that snow away. hahahahaha
Lisa! After you said you loved the smell of spring mornings . . . ;-)) it just gets a little long in the tooth if you know what I mean - to have the snow here for so long. We will love it again next year. But right now it is all icky gray and nasty and needs to go away.
Yes, MaryLou, I have read most of Dana's books - and have even met her and had dinner with her at our small writers group meeting. She is a vivacious and very neat person. But, you know, I saw her at a theatre in Anchorage (after I had met her here in Kenai) and I was too shy to go up and say hello. A bit of star-struck-edness, I guess. She has a website - google her name and you will find it.
Heather - we may not seem to have as much summer as you all do, but our daylight hours are longer and we do twice as much, so it seems just as long - really it does. We just pack it all into fewer days. ;-))
Ladybug, I have Dana's books that you may BORROW - if you like.
>..<
You know, I'm a tad worried that it will be too hot here. :) When I was in college we used to laugh at the "crazy mainland girls" sunbathing in their bikinis while the rest of us were drinking hot cocoa in our sweats and jackets. Sigh, those were the days! Muahh!
Oh, man, "Motorcycle Weather" comin' right up!
LOL... now that you tell the story about you meeting her I remember her.and YES I would like to read them eventually. I am in the middle of 4 that I cant seem to finnish. must be becouse of all the kids. will get to it soon though
