Comparisons

You might remember this photo from one of my late winter/early spring trips to Anchorage . . .

Well, here is the same location on the 19th of June:

What a difference a few months can make, huh?

Tomorrow is our receptionist's last day. She is moving on to a better job and so I wish her well. However, that means I will be staffing the front desk again while the search for her replacement continues. The job is already being advertised and will close on the 7th. I hope that her replacement will be on staff by the 15th.

Until then, I will be pulling double duty - again. Not sure how the director will have me work - she is on leave and won't be back until the 6th. Then we will discuss all of the ins and outs of it. The last time I worked 31 hours at the desk and 9 hours at my own job.

Next week I am taking Monday for the holiday and my regular day off on Friday - so I will be doing reception duty T-Th, and the other two days will be staffed by everyone else. The position closes on the 7th when interviews will start and I hope that a new person will be on staff by the 15th. Hey, a moose can hope, right? Right.

Received an email yesterday from a second cousin(?). Not sure of all of the ins and outs of relatives past the first cousin - I've heard it called second cousin and I've heard it called first cousin once removed. Whatever . . . his mother was my cousin. She passed away last October and he contacted me soon afterwards.

His son is at University Alaska Fairbanks this summer and we are going to try to get together while he is in the state.

Fairbanks is NOT the place to be right now. There are several fires burning in the Interior and Fairbanks is getting a lot of the smoke. Yuk!

In talking with this young man - well, emailing - we talked about how sad it is to lose touch with relatives due to being spread out across the map. He is from my mom's side of the family and they all spread out westward from our home state of Ohio. My mom and my grandmother were the only ones who stayed in Ohio, althogh Grandma was living in CA when she passed away. There is only one of my aunts living now - and she has just moved back to Ohio.

On the opposite side of it - nearly all of my dad's family stayed in Ohio. One of his brothers moved westward to Arizona.

And, here I am way up here in Alaska - about as far away from it all as you could get. ;-) That's all part of life, isn't it?

Well, you all have a great Thursday.

I just had to say those photos are breathtaking. =) I've always wanted to visit Alaska but haven't made it there yet... seeing pics like that makes me all the more determined to get the heck out of Ohio and go there. thank you for the renewed determination! =)
